Dig in: Gem & Mineral show returns

The Copper Country Rock & Mineral Club will host their annual Gem & Mineral show this weekend Friday, August 11 through Sunday, August 13.

The event will take place at the Houghton Elementary School on Bridge Street.

Dr. Nathalie Brandes, geologist and author will share a presentation Friday and Saturday at 4 p.m. during which attendees will journey through the geologic formation of the Great Lakes States over 3.5 billion years.

Friday, the event will begin at 1 p.m. and go until 8 p.m. Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In addition to samples and presentations the event will feature door prizes, displays and a silent auction of minerals, copper and other items. Children can look forward to mineral exploration with a metal detector as well as a mineral grab bag and other activities.

The event will wrap up Keweenaw Week 2023. Each day this week the Copper Country Rock & Mineral Club will host field trips to local areas of geologic interest.
